Four-way pallet trucks for flexible goods handling
Four-way pallet trucks are designed for agile and flexible goods handling, particularly in confined spaces. Unlike standard hand pallet trucks, which generally move backwards and forwards, four-way pallet jacks can also travel sideways. Additional transverse rollers allow you to manoeuvre pallets and other bulky loads in different directions, and some models are suitable for transporting extra-wide or extra-long goods.
1. What are the advantages of a four-way pallet truck?
A four-way pallet truck offers several benefits when goods need to be moved, handled or stored in areas with limited space.
- Flexible movement in confined spaces: Four-way pallet trucks are extremely manoeuvrable and can be used in narrow aisles and other restricted areas. Their additional rollers enable sideways movement, and they are suitable for transporting extra-wide or extra-long goods. The steering drawbar allows a steering angle of up to 205°, helping you position the truck precisely during handling operations.
- Robust steel construction: Depending on the model, four-way pallet trucks can handle loads of up to 2500 kg. The welded steel frame and reinforced steering drawbar provide a stable, torsion-resistant construction for demanding handling tasks.
- Reliable hydraulic pump: The robust hydraulic pump is made from high-strength steel and powers the lifting mechanism. Chrome-plated pressure pistons are designed for intensive use, while the integrated overload valve when helps protect the pump against heavy loads.
- Smooth-running castors: The swivel and fork castors are made from durable polyurethane (PU) and support quiet, low-effort movement. Infeed and outfeed rollers also make it easier to pick up and release pallets.
2. How does a 4-way pallet truck work?
Using a four-way pallet truck is straightforward. First, position the forks underneath the pallet and pump the drawbar to raise the load. To activate sideways movement, raise the forks to approximately 180 mm. This usually requires around eight pumping movements until the transverse rollers are fully lowered onto the floor.
Once the transverse rollers are engaged, turn the steering drawbar through 90° and lock it into position. The forks are then positioned perpendicular to the direction of travel, allowing the pallet truck to move sideways.
Please note: The maximum load capacity may be lower when the four-way pallet truck is travelling sideways. For example, a model with a maximum load capacity of 2500 kg may be able to carry approximately 1500 kg during transverse movement. Always follow the load capacity specifications for the individual model.
