1. What is an electric pallet truck?
An electric pallet truck allows you to pick up, transport, and move goods on pallets and other heavy loads that can be driven under with minimal physical effort. Its electric drive and lift mechanism make these tasks significantly less physically demanding than with a fully manual hand pallet truck.
Unlike electric stacker trucks or electric forklifts, which can also lift loads to height and stack them in racking, electric pallet trucks have a maximum lift height of 207 mm and are therefore designed exclusively for horizontal goods transport.
Most electric pallet jacks are operated in tiller-guided pedestrian mode, but some models are also fitted with a foldable or extendable standing platform. There are also models with a permanently integrated operator's platform or side seat. For these models, operators must have received adequate training and be authorised by their employer to operate the equipment, in accordance with PUWER 1998.
2. What types of electric pallet truck are available?
Powered pallet trucks are available in two main variants, which differ primarily in their performance capabilities:

Electric hand pallet truck
Fully electric hand pallet trucks are reliable entry-level models for pedestrian use, ideal for light-duty work over short distances. Most are designed for indoor use, though some models can also be used outdoors in dry conditions.
Compared to manual hand pallet trucks, electric hand pallet trucks offer improved ergonomics and efficiency. Their lithium-ion technology means that they are almost as lightweight and just as manoeuvrable as the manual models.
Electric drive requires no physical effort to manoeuvre the loaded truck. You travel using the electric drive function, raise the load electrically, and lower it electrically.
Several Jungheinrich PROFISHOP models feature an LC display, showing key information at a glance, including battery level, operating hours, and creep speed mode.
Electric powered pallet truck
Our electric powered pallet trucks are available both as tiller-guided pedestrian models and as rider-operated models with a side seat or standing platform on request.
Depending on the model, these premium machines are suitable for indoor use, outdoor applications, and transportation on lorries.
Electric powered pallet trucks are fitted with a 5-point chassis as standard to ensure maximum stability when travelling and cornering. The drive wheel is centrally positioned beneath the tiller. Support rollers on either side of the drive wheel prevent the truck from rocking on uneven surfaces.
Our fully electric powered pallet trucks are more robust and capable than our electric hand pallet truck models.
Electric powered pallet trucks are also available as heavy-duty models with a load capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes. We also stock special-size models with short fork lengths or extra-wide forks for cross-loading.

Electric pallet trucks at Jungheinrich PROFISHOP are available with either a DC or three-phase AC drive motor, powered by high-performance lead-acid, maintenance-free lead-gel batteries, or maintenance-free, innovative lithium-ion batteries – depending on the model.
Many electric pallet jacks, such as certain models from our lithium-ion pallet truck range and our lead-acid battery-powered models, feature an integrated charger for recharging the battery. If you regularly move and relocate loads as part of your operations, it may also be worth investing in a spare battery for your lithium-ion-powered trucks. While the charged battery is in use in the truck, the second battery can already be charging via the external charger, ready for the next shift.
Depending on the model, Jungheinrich PROFISHOP electric pallet trucks are equipped with the following safety features:
- Long, low-set tiller for a safe distance between the operator and the truck
- Steel cover over the drive wheel to protect against foot injuries
- Anti-ride safety button
- Emergency stop button
- Creep speed button for safe manoeuvring with the tiller raised in confined spaces
4. How to find the right electric pallet truck
Electric pallet trucks are extremely versatile. Depending on the model, they can be used as industrial trucks in warehouses and retail spaces, for loading and unloading lorries, and for goods delivery. Answer these simple questions to help identify the right electric pallet truck for you:
- Where will you use the truck?
- Do you need a model with a DC or three-phase AC motor?
- What is the maximum load weight that you will be transporting?
- What fork length and width are needed?
- How intensively will you use your electric pallet truck?
- Will you cover long distances and therefore require a rider-operated model?
- What tyres are best suited to the surfaces on which you will operate your truck?
- Do you need any special features, such as battery change systems, creep speed button, CurveCONTROL, ProTracLink, or PIN code access, to work more efficiently?
5. Consider the application area
At Jungheinrich PROFISHOP, you will find electric pallet trucks to suit a wide range of working environments:

Good to know: The Jungheinrich Professional Series (EJE) electric pallet trucks recover energy through regenerative braking. This efficient energy management system extends battery operating time.
7. Buying an electric pallet truck with sufficient load capacity
The maximum load a truck can carry is a key factor in your buying decision. Consider both the average weight of your typical loads and any peak loads you expect to handle.
You can check whether a model will be suitable for your operational loads by looking at its load capacity or, for electric powered pallet trucks, its rated load. This indicates the maximum load with which the truck may be operated.
We offer electric pallet trucks with a load capacity of up to 2,000 kg. For heavy-duty transport, we can also supply models with a maximum rated load of 3,500 kg. Many of our models are fitted with an overload protection system to prevent overloading.
The electric pallet jacks in our range are available with the following load capacities:
| Load capacity | Models |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,400 kg |
|
| Up to 1,500 kg |
|
| Up to 1,600 kg |
|
| Up to 1,800 kg |

Load capacity or lifting capacity? The term "lifting capacity" is sometimes used informally when referring to the load capacity of electric pallet trucks and other industrial trucks. However, "lifting capacity" is imprecise and refers more generally to the lifting force of a moving body. In the context of industrial trucks, the correct terms are load capacity, rated load capacity, and rated load.
8. Fork length and fork width to match your load
Electric pallet trucks can handle palletised goods, mesh containers, and other load carriers, provided they have entry pockets for the forks. Choose a model with the right fork length and width for the loads you typically handle. Our range includes:
| Load type | Examples | Corresponding fork tine dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Standard |
|
|
| Non-standard sizes: small |

Good to know: Pallets are also referred to as two-way or four-way pallets. The first number indicates how many entry points are available for industrial trucks. The entry height is always 100 mm.
9. Choosing the right battery type for your electric pallet truck
Our electric pallet trucks are powered by rechargeable batteries. Depending on the model, batteries can be recharged at a standard 230 V socket via an integrated or external charger. The following battery types are available:

10. Defining the usage intensity of your electric pallet truck
Depending on how frequently and how intensively you plan to use your electric pallet truck, you will need to choose a model with a corresponding performance profile.
The battery type is secondary when using an electric tiller-guided pallet truck in a multi-shift operation. What matters more is that the battery capacity is designed for multi-shift use and that the vehicle components – above all the performance of the lift and drive motors – are up to the task.
Here's what to expect from each shift pattern:
- Single-shift operation: light-duty use, covering approximately 500 to 1,000 operating hours per year
- Double-shift operation: medium-duty use, covering approximately 1,000 to 1,700 operating hours per year
- Triple-shift operation: heavy-duty use, covering more than 1,700 operating hours per year
Only the Jungheinrich Professional Series are designed for multi-shift operation.
11. Choosing the right tyres for the surface
Electric pallet trucks feature a 3-, 4-, or 5-point chassis depending on the model range, comprising a drive wheel, support wheels, and fork rollers. For particularly heavy loads, the fork rollers are also available in a tandem configuration.
Dual rollers distribute weight more evenly, making them particularly well suited for use on uneven floors and when crossing thresholds. This results in smooth, stable travel and reduces wear on individual rollers. Smooth-rolling wheels and rollers make the truck easy to manoeuvre, while entry rollers at the fork tips help guide the forks in and out of pallets.
To ensure the tyres on your electric pallet truck are suited to your planned transport tasks and floor surfaces, models in our range are fitted with polyurethane drive wheels and fork rollers as standard. This makes them ideal for frequent use on hard and sensitive floors. Additional tyre materials for specialist applications are available for the Jungheinrich Professional Series EJE range.
12. Pedestrian or rider-operated electric pallet truck?
Our electric pallet trucks are available as pedestrian-operated or rider-operated models, as well as with an optional combined pedestrian/rider mode. Choose the model that best suits the distances you typically cover in your warehouse or production facility:
- Pedestrian operation: These electric pallet trucks are tiller-guided, meaning the operator walks alongside or in front of the truck. They are fitted with a long, low-set tiller for maintaining a safe distance between the truck and the operator. The drive wheel is steered by swivelling the tiller in the desired direction. Pedestrian models are ideal for shorter transport distances.
- Rider operation: Rider-operated models allow the operator to travel on a permanently integrated operator's platform or seat, making them ideal for longer transport distances without operator fatigue. These models are fitted with a short tiller. Rider-operated electric pallet trucks are available from us on request.
- Combined pedestrian/rider operation: All steering and operating functions are carried out by the operator, whether walking alongside or riding on the truck. A foldable or permanently fitted standing platform is available for the operator to use when in rider mode. These trucks are fitted with a short tiller and are ideal for medium-distance transport. These models are available from us on request only.
Please note: In the UK, there is no government-issued forklift licence. However, under PUWER 1998, employers must ensure that all operators of powered pallet trucks – including rider-operated models – have received adequate training and are authorised to use the equipment. Accredited training is strongly recommended.
13. FAQs for electric pallet trucks
In the UK, electric pallet trucks must be kept in safe working order under PUWER 1998. Because pallet trucks only raise loads a short distance off the ground (typically under 300 mm), they fall outside the scope of LOLER thorough examination requirements. That said, regular inspections and maintenance are still required under PUWER to ensure the equipment remains safe to use. A quick pre-use check should also be carried out at the start of each shift, covering:
- A visual check for any obvious damage or leaks
- Test the drive and brakes
- Check the pallet truck hydraulics and oil level
- Checking driving behaviour, particularly when cornering and manoeuvring
In the UK, there is no formal government-issued licence required to operate an electric pallet truck. However, under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), employers are legally required to ensure that all operators have received adequate training and are competent to use the equipment safely. For powered pallet trucks, accredited training from organisations such as RTITB or ITSSAR is strongly recommended. Operators must also be authorised by their employer before using the equipment.
Some electric pallet truck models can temporarily be used outdoors in dry conditions or light rain. However, to get the most out of your truck over the long term, it is advisable that you don’t use it in wet outdoor environments.
Some pedestrian electric pallet trucks are fitted with a platform that can be folded out or extended, giving the operator somewhere to stand on longer runs. Other models feature a permanently integrated operator's platform or seat. For these more complex machines, accredited operator training is strongly recommended.
This design has several advantages:
- Travel speeds above 6 km/h
- Reduced time requirements for the operator
- Ideal for longer transport distances
As small warehouses typically involve shorter transport distances, a pedestrian-only model is generally sufficient.
It may also be worth opting for a particularly narrow model with agile handling if you work in small warehouses, as these trucks handle well even in narrow aisles and tight corners.
The battery type fitted in the truck is also important for small warehouses. While models with lithium-ion or lead-gel batteries can be charged at any standard 230 V socket, electric pallet trucks with lead-acid batteries require dedicated charging infrastructure, including a charging station with ventilation and specific safety clearances from surrounding storage equipment. In small warehouses, space for this may not be available.
Prices for electric pallet trucks vary depending on the model, performance, and specification:
- Electric hand pallet trucks: approx. £990 to £3,000 (excluding VAT)
- Electric powered pallet trucks: approx. £6,700 to £8,900 (excluding VAT)
Buying an electric pallet truck makes sense if your daily operations involve high goods throughput and the regular movement of heavy loads. In these cases, electric pallet trucks are more ergonomic and efficient than manual alternatives.
The travel speed of an electric pallet truck varies depending on the model and load:
Electric hand pallet trucks:
- PTL 1.5 range: 4.0 km/h (with load); 4.5 km/h (without load)
- PTE 1.5 range: 4.6 km/h (with load); 4.8 km/h (without load)
- PTE 1.6 range: 4.8 km/h (with load); 5.2 km/h (without load)
- AME 15 range: 5.0 km/h (with load); 5.5 km/h (without load)
- AME 18 range: 5.0 km/h (with load); 5.5 km/h (without load)
